Maryland gains 6,700 jobs in January

Maryland gained 6,700 jobs in January while the unemployment rate held steady. The private sector added 7,500 jobs while the state saw a loss of 800 government jobs, according to preliminary data released Tuesday by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics. The unemployment rate remained 4.2 percent, lower than U.S. rate of 4.8 percent in January. The loss in government jobs could become a persistent problem for Maryland.
