The growth of a business rarely happens in a vacuum. The rise of one company often means the fall of another. For many business owners, the year 2018 marked the end of the line. Operating plans were scrapped and doors were closed as the landscape of business failed to play out as intended. You can look back at some of these stories, as told by The Business Journals publications over the past year, through the gallery presented here. Not included in the gallery are the many businesses still in…

Opinion: How Maryland played a losing HQ2 game

For the government officials of the 18 jurisdictions that lost the contest for Amazon’s new second headquarters, the final decision was a real-life lesson on game theory.   On Oct. 13, Amazon announced that it would split the proposed “HQ2” between Long Island and Arlington, Virginia. All told, some 238 contestants made at least an initial pitch for the facility.   As one of the 20 finalists announced back in January, Maryland government decided to up its chances by offering $6.5 billion…

The article was a relatively simple one about a massive home in Deep Creek set to go to auction. But our readers loved it and it took off across social media, generating hundreds of thousands of page views. Expensive homes are certainly a…
