'A good start underway,' Howard Hughes officials say of Columbia's downtown redevelopment

A 350-unit multi-family development and the first of two office towers in Columbia’s new Merriweather District are expected to break ground in the mid-2017, the developer said Wednesday. Howard Hughes Corp. officials said those buildings along with a new parking structure funded with a tax increment financing package just passed by the Howard County Council will be a big component of the 5 million-square-foot district to be located in downtown Columbia. “We’ve got a good start underway with 1.3…

Alan D. Wilson will step down as chairman of McCormick & Co. Inc., effective Jan. 31, handing over the position to CEO Lawrence Kurzius. Wilson will remain a member of McCormick’s (NYSE: MKC) board and will be a senior adviser. “Under Lawrence’s leadership, we have a great team of executives with relevant food industry…

Rawlings-Blake looks forward, not back, during final days in office

Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake says she doesn’t concern herself with other people are saying about her. Her father, former Del. Pete Rawlings, was that way — and raised her to have thick skin as well, she said during her final public press conference as mayor. After serving in the position for almost seven years, Rawlings-Blake’s time at City Hill is winding down before Mayor-elect Catherine Pugh takes over on Dec. 6. And although some people may be critical of her work, Rawlings-Blake said she…

Live Nation, SMG contract to operate Pier Six is approved despite protest

A contract that will have Live Nation and SMG co-operating Pier Six for up to 10 years was approved by the city’s spending board Wednesday despite opposition from AEG Live, the entertainment promoter that submitted a competing bid to operate the concert venue. The approval by the Board of Estimates came as city lawyers rebuffed claims from AEG that the Baltimore Development Corp. violated the city charter by asking for “best and final” bids on multiple occasions. After hearing arguments from the…
