Maryland rises in annual healthiest state ranking

Maryland is the 18th healthiest state in the country, according to an annual report. The state rose one spot from its previous position in the latest United Health Foundation’s yearly America’s Health Rankings report, thanks to markedly low rates of mental health distress and child poverty. The report details state and national data regarding key public health indicators like smoking, access to primary care physicians and uninsured rates. Maryland had fallen to No. 19 in the 2018 report, largely…

Year in Review 2019: Recession fears never came to light but remain top of mind for businesses

Many business leaders wondered if 2019 was going to be the year the U.S. economy finally fell into a recession. It wasn’t. Instead of a recession, the economy has continued to plow forward. Every month more jobs are added, inflation remains low and there even seems to be a resolution coming in the U.S. trade war with China. Locally, job growth was sluggish in Maryland during the first half of the year but picked up during the second half. The state’s unemployment rate fell to its lowest level in…

Year in Review 2019: Ongoing growth in the suburbs

Growth in the Baltimore suburbs moved at a fast pace this year. The metro area’s expansions included new office space, retail and industrial growth supported by successful leasing efforts and plans for more movement in the coming year. Leading the way again was the massive Tradepoint Atlantic project in Dundalk. The conversion of the former Sparrows Point steel mill site into an international trade hub continued as Floor & Decor and Home Depot inked deals to lead the way for more than 8 million…

Amazon.com Inc. Nine local A.C. Moore stores are closing, laying off 259 employees

Nine A.C. Moore stores in Maryland will close at the end of February, resulting in 259 layoffs. The arts and crafts retailer is shuttering all 145 of its stores across the U.S., but had said in November that some locations would be turned into Michaels. The two subsidiaries of the Michaels Cos. A Dec. 17…

The Newseum is closing. Here's what's next for the building and the Freedom Forum.

The Newseum will close its doors Tuesday after more than 11 years at its Pennsylvania Avenue location.  Long hampered by mounting expenses and debt, the museum announced its closing date in October — several months after the Freedom Forum Inc., its owner and founder, announced a deal to sell the building located at 555 Pennsylvania Ave. NW to Johns Hopkins University for $372.5 million.   The Freedom Forum filed a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification with the District in October saying…
