Highlandtown's Gnocco tweaks its name after copyright dispute

After more than two years as a Mediterranean-inspired restaurant called Gnocco, the Highlandtown concept is changing its name. Over the weekend, the restaurant at 3734 Fleet St. will become Gnocchetto, an Italian word meaning “small dumpling.” The change is due to a copyright dispute with a New York restaurant bearing the same name. Chef Brian Lavin and general manager Sam White made the “difficult decision” to change the name, adding that “It’ll just be easier in the long run.” Lavin and White…

Towson mall's IndiBowl expanding, opening soon at Mt. Vernon Marketplace

IndiBowl, a fast-casual Indian eatery in the Towson Town Center food court, has its eyes on expanding into Baltimore City — and beyond. Co-owner Ravi Kuriseti said he plans to open a second location of the restaurant within the Mt. Vernon Marketplace this November. He’s also looking at other markets in the city, and hopes to have at least five IndiBowls open by the end of next year. Ravi and his wife, co-owner Devi Kuriseti, launched IndiBowl in Towson late last year. The couple also owns the…

Maryland gas prices hit four-year Labor Day weekend high

Maryland fuel prices will be at four-year high for the Labor Day weekend. The average price for a gallon of regular gas in the state averaged $2.78 on Friday, according to AAA Mid-Atlantic, the highest point for the holiday since 2014. Gas prices across the state are 39 cents higher than this time last year, when Labor Day fuel prices spiked as a result of Hurricane Harvey. This year’s increase comes despite no hurricane activity. Fuel prices in Maryland are unchanged from last week and down…

Indigma owners have plans for Tavern on the Hill space in Mount Vernon

The owners of Indigma, an Indian restaurant that closed last year near Mount Vernon’s Washington monument, appear to have new plans in the neighborhood. A liquor board notice posted on the former Tavern on the Hill space at 900 Cathedral St. indicates Anthony Chemmanoor and Christina Martija want to open a restaurant there. The application, for a transfer of ownership of Tavern on the Hill’s liquor license, was filed by Bombay Grill of Baltimore, Inc., trading as Indigma. I’ve reached out to…

Baltimore's second Diner en Blanc surprises and entertains atop a Harbor Point plaza (PHOTOS)

Diner en Blanc bills itself as an exclusive night of surprises, with the biggest unveiling of the evening — the location of the pop-up dinner — kept a closely guarded secret. That’s why when Beatty Development Group agreed to host this year’s event at its Harbor Point Central Plaza, the three employees involved in coordinating the effort had to sign an intimidating looking non-disclosure agreement. Even Michael Beatty, president of the Baltimore development company, wasn’t let in on the secret,…

Another dockless transportation startup, Lime, will drop its electric scooters in Baltimore on Saturday. Lime’s scooters are accessed through a mobile app and cost $1 to unlock and 15 cents per minute of riding. Riders must be 18-years-old, have a drivers license, wear…

How an Annapolis yacht dealer sailed into the Inc. 5000

It certainly did not look promising when Rob Taishoff and two of his friends who all just retired from active duty got together and decided to buy a boat company coming out of the Great Recession. “People don’t need boats. No matter how big or small it is, it’s a luxury item,” said Taishoff, now CEO and principal of Annapolis Yacht Sales. But the Annapolis boat dealer’s recent revenue growth is emblematic of a turnaround in an industry that was drastically affected by the economic downturn…
