Hogan designates $50 million to combat opioid problem

Gov. Larry Hogan declared Maryland’s opioid epidemic a state of emergency, signing an executive order for $50 million in new funding to address the crisis. Heroin and fentanyl are two of the most common and dangerous opioid drugs in use today, increasing at a fast pace across Maryland and the U.S. There were 918 fatal heroin overdoses in Maryland between January and September 2016, nearly double the amount from the previous year’s period, according to the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.…
