Maryland doctors writing fewer opioid prescriptions as overdose crisis peaks

A study from Maryland State Medical Society, MedChi, shows local physicians are writing fewer opioid prescriptions, as the state continues to battle an overdose crisis. Gov. Larry Hogan this year declared Maryland’s opioid epidemic a state of emergency, signing an executive order for $50 million in new funding to address the crisis. The order came in response to the 918 fatal heroin overdoses in Maryland between January and September 2016 — nearly double the amount from the previous year’s period.…
