Consolidation of the bank industry continued in 2019, including a rare mega-merger between two banks that already had large footprints in Greater Baltimore. BB&T Corp. and SunTrust Banks Inc. announced in February a $66 billion “merger of equals” creating a new bank called Truist Financial Corp. that will be headquartered in Charlotte.
