Maryland gains jobs in January, unemployment rate improves

Maryland added 1,900 jobs in January, led by gains in the professional services and construction industries. The state’s preliminary unemployment rate dropped from 5 percent in December to 4.9 in January, according to data released Monday by the U.S. Department of Labor. The labor department also revised Maryland’s preliminary jobs estimate for December from a gain of 10,500 jobs to a gain of 3,300 jobs. For January, the state’s professional and business services sector increased by 2,800 positions.…
