As we come to the final days of 2019, we pause to remember the business and community leaders who left us over the past 12 months. The individuals spotlighted here made their marks across business lines. Some provided leadership at nationally known brands; others were known more locally than coast to coast. Each, however, shaped how business was done and how companies were run. You can learn more about them and their accomplishments through the stories presented by The Business Journals in the…

RoFo or Wawa? It’s becoming a bit of a debate among Marylanders these days as the Philadelphia-based convenience store continues to extend its reach into Royal Farms territory. While many Baltimoreans remain loyal to Royal Farms and its fried chicken, a new ranking of the best convenience stores in the country put Wawa and its hoagies ahead. Food & Wine magazine ranked Wawa No. 2 in the U.S., only beat out by Texas’ cult favorite Buc-ees, known for its massive stores featuring barbecue, branded…
The most-viewed article the Baltimore Business Journal published this year wasn’t exactly what you would expect. In recent years the title has gone to big stories about Under Armour founder Kevin Plank, or an exclusive on Great Wolf Lodge coming to Cecil County, like last year. However, for 2019 it was an article first published in May by our sister paper the Dallas Business Journal with the headline, “Craftsman tools brand plans to open major manufacturing plant in Texas.” The article is about…

The company’s investments include the Port Covington redevelopment project, the Sagamore Spirit distillery, Rye Street Tavern, Sagamore Ventures and City Garage.…
Maryland’s cannabis industry has continued making strides toward expansion and diversification this year, against a backdrop of controversy and corruption. This year, the top-of-mind issues for those participating in and overseeing the state industry included consumer concerns about spikes in lung injury cases related to vaping marijuana, difficulties in enacting legislation passed during the most recent General Assembly session and news that former state Del. Cheryl Glenn, one of the industry's…
Amazon.com Inc. (NASDAQ: AMZN) boasted of “record-breaking” sales over the holiday season last week, though it declined to disclose revenue to compare that post-Christmas claim to previous holiday shopping seasons. Still, the announcement did offer some sales details, including a claim that more than a half-billion items were ordered. The news sent the Seattle e-commerce giant’s share price up about 4.5% on Thursday trading, reaching $1,868.77. It was the company’s best day of trading since…
Edmart, Pikesville’s “biggest little delicatessen,” will close at the end of the year after more than six decades of selling corned beef, warm brisket, chopped liver and other Jewish delicacies. Owner Shelley Wiseman says she wants to spend more time with her family after years of working seven days a week. The deli’s last day will be Tuesday. Not much has changed, look-wise, inside the little store at 1427 Reisterstown Road since Wiseman’s father, Marty Lev, opened it in 1958. The deli’s name…
