The number of households in Maryland where people are working but still struggle to afford basic needs continues to grow. Between 2014 and 2016, the proportion of such households in the state increased by more than 81,000, according to a new report from United Way of Central Maryland. Thirty-eight percent of households in Maryland, or 825,433, struggled to afford housing, child care, food, transportation, health care and smartphones in 2016. That’s up from 35 percent in 2014.
