Maryland biotechs, lawmakers call for changes to 'overutilized' tax credit program

The state-run biotechnology investment tax credit program may be getting too successful for its own good. The program is extremely popular, and supply of tax credits each year far outweighs demand. In fiscal year 2018 to date, 162 investors received the credit, out of roughly 450 total applicants. There is $12 million in credits still available, and investors in a single company are eligible to receive up to 15 percent, or about $1.8 million, of that total.
